The Mystery of the Missing Laptop

When sixteen-year-old Daniel arrived at the school library on Monday morning, he noticed that his laptop was missing. He had left it on a desk near the window on Friday afternoon because he had been working on a history project. Although the library was usually a safe place, several students had been using it during the weekend.

Daniel immediately informed the librarian, Mrs Harris. She checked the library's sign-in records and discovered that three people had entered the building after Daniel had left: a cleaner, a computer technician and a former student who had come to collect some documents.

The school contacted the police. Officer Grant arrived an hour later and began investigating. He explained that even a seemingly simple theft required careful attention to evidence. The police examined the library entrance and interviewed the people who had been in the building.

The cleaner said she had noticed a young man carrying a large backpack near the computer room. However, she could not identify him because he had been wearing a cap. The technician confirmed that he had repaired two computers but had not entered the library. The former student, Alex, said he had only spent five minutes collecting his documents.

Officer Grant then asked to see the school's security footage. The cameras showed Alex entering the library at 5:20 p.m. and leaving twelve minutes later. He was carrying a backpack that looked considerably heavier when he left.

The police contacted Alex, who initially denied taking anything. However, when officers explained what the footage showed, he admitted that he had taken the laptop. He claimed he had intended to sell it because he needed money urgently.

Fortunately, the laptop was recovered before it could be sold. Daniel got it back the following day and was able to finish his project. The school also decided to improve its security system and remind students never to leave valuable belongings unattended.

Daniel learned an important lesson: trust is essential, but taking sensible precautions is equally important.
