Welcome to Kyiv! It is one of the largest and the most beautiful cities in world. Nearly 3 000 000 people live here. Kyiv is a very ancient city. The most famous sights are Kontraktova Square, the Golden Gates, St Sophia's Cathedral, St. Andrew's Church, Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, Andriyivsky Uzviz. The capital of Ukraine is one of the oldest European cities. Prince Kyi founded the city 1500 years ago.
The oldest monastery in Kyiv is Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. It is situated in Pechersk district. There are lots of caves in it. These caves used to be homes. There are six underground churches in these caves now. Tourists visit them every year. They are rather small.
St Sophia's Cathedral was built in 1037. This church was built long ago but it still has beautiful frescoes and mosaics.
The Golden Gates are situated not far from the Cathedral. They were built in the 11th century. The Golden Gates used to be both the main entrance to the city and a barrier.
St Andrew's Church was built in the 18th century and is situated in Andriyivsky Uzviz. The main street of the capital is Khreshchatyk. It is very wide with outstanding buildings. It is a shopping centre with cafés and restaurants.
Kyiv is situated in Europe.
