Foreign Languages In Our Life
A native language is the language which we speak at home, with our family. The official language of a country is the language which is used in official documents, spoken on the national radio and TV.
Foreign languages are languages spoken abroad, those you can choose to study. Some people learn foreign languages for business. Others learn languages to be able to travel to different places. There are also people who like learning languages as a hobby. So, it’s absolutely clear that learning foreign languages is very important. Foreign languages are used in plenty of different branches from economy to medicine. All big companies demand that their employees know a foreign language at an appropriate level. Those who know at least one foreign language are often paid more even if they don’t often use it at work.
Foreign languages are used in everyday life, too. Many users’ manuals are written in one or several foreign languages but have no equivalent in our native one. While travelling we can easily ask for the way in an unknown city, order meals or buy tickets.
English is considered to be an international language. Around 700 million people are believed to speak English as a foreign language. Besides, it has an official or special status in dozens of countries. The main reason for why English has spread all over the world is the British colonialism of the 18th -19th centuries as well as American capitalism and technological progress of the 20th century. Computer users often face the necessity of knowing English as it’s the main language of numerous Internet sites, computer games and international social networks and chats. English has become an inescapable part of our life. So, in my opinion, every educated person should be able to understand, speak and write English.
