Chimpanzees
Sometimes we see chimpanzees doing human things. They drink from cups or take photos. Why? Chimpanzees belong to the same family of apes as huge gorillas of Africa and red orangutans of Southeast Asia, but scientists think the chimpanzees are the most intelligent.
They come from the rainforests and grasslands of Central and West Africa. They have got long black hair and they haven't got tails. An adult male is about 85 centimetres tall and weighs about forty kilos.
Chimpanzees live in large groups of twenty-five to fifty animals and one male chimpanzee is the leader. They spend most of their time on the ground but they also climb trees to find food. They eat mainly fruit and insects and sometimes they eat meat, such as monkeys. When they hunt, the males work together. Then they share the food with the whole family group.
But the greatest sign of the chimpanzee's intelligence is that it makes and uses tools. It pokes a stick into an ants' nest, then pulls out the stick and eats the ants. It also uses stones to crack nuts and it chews leaves to make a sponge to mop up water. Some chimpanzees can even communicate with humans by using sign language or a computer!
Choose the correct variant.
Chimpanzees can act as humans.
