Life with a Chameleon
by Leo, 13
Hey there, readers!
While most kids my age have dogs, cats, or even rabbits as pets, I wanted something different—something unique. So, last year, for my 12th birthday, my parents gave me the most unexpected gift: a chameleon. I named him Zippy, and he has become my favourite companion.
At first, I wasn’t sure if I could take care of such a strange animal. I mean, chameleons aren’t exactly common pets. But after reading a few books and watching videos online, I realised they are fascinating creatures. Zippy can change his colour depending on his surroundings, his mood, or even the temperature. Sometimes he's bright green, other times he's a mix of brown and yellow. It’s like having a small, colourful alien in my room!
Zippy lives in a large glass terrarium filled with plants, vines, and a special heat lamp. Chameleons need warmth and humidity, so I have to spray water inside the terrarium twice a day. He also needs UV light to stay healthy. Taking care of him is not as simple as feeding a goldfish, but I enjoy the responsibility.
Feeding time is always fun. Zippy eats live insects—mostly crickets, but sometimes flies or mealworms. He catches them with his incredibly long and sticky tongue. It’s really fast—blink, and you’ll miss it! I use tweezers to give him the food, but sometimes I just watch him hunt on his own. It’s like a mini wildlife documentary in my bedroom.
Zippy isn’t cuddly or playful like a puppy, but he’s peaceful, quiet, and absolutely fascinating to watch. When my friends come over, they’re usually shocked at first. “Is that real?” they ask. But after a few minutes, they’re totally hooked and start asking a hundred questions about him.
Having an unusual pet like Zippy has taught me a lot about responsibility, patience, and the beauty of nature. Not many people get to say they have a miniature jungle in their room—and a colour-changing friend to go with it!
Would you ever consider getting a pet that’s a little out of the ordinary? Let me know in the comments—I’d love to hear your thoughts!
