Text Script 1

We interrupt this program to bring you a news flash. A group of dangerous and heavily armed criminals is told to be seen not far from the Shellsby after the robbery of Mega Bank last night. Several police officers were seriously injured during the incident. The description of one of the suspects – and perhaps the leader of the group – is as follows. This man is described by witnesses as tall, well-built and middle-aged (probably in his early forties). He has pale skin and a square face with very short black hair, brown eyes and thin lips. One witness noticed a scar on his left arm. He was wearing dark blue jeans and a black T-shirt. Unfortunately, we have no description of other suspects, but if you believe you have seen the person described, please, contact your local police station.

Great Britain is the largest island of Europe and the seventh largest island in the world. The waters of the North Sea and the English Channel separate Great Britain from Europe.

England occupies the southern and the eastern parts of Great Britain. It has an area of 50,327 mi ²(sq miles). Scotland, covering 30,400 mi²(sq miles), lies to the north. Wales, to the west, has an area of 8,016 mi² and Northern Ireland – 5,460 mi². No part of Great Britain is more than 70 miles from the sea.

Great Britain has six distinct natural regions. The Highlands is northern Scotland is a region of mountain ranges, plateaus, deep valleys and lakes. Ben Nevis – the highest peak in Great Britain – rises in the Highlands. The Scottish Lowlands lie in the valleys of the Clyde, Forth and Tay rivers. Scotland principal cities lie in this area. The Pennine Chain, a region rich in iron and coal, extends from the Scottish Lowlands. The Midlands is a lowland region, between the southern end of the Pennine Chain and the Cambrian Mountains of Wales.

The south-eastern plains include the entire area south and east of the Pennines and to the Midlands. This region includes chalk downs and low plains and fenlands. These plains ere the first part of the island to be settled and are Great Britain’s best farmlands.

Northern Ireland is a lowland region surrounding an area of peat bogs. It includes Lough Neagh, the largest lake in the United Kingdom.

Great Britain is not large enough to have many long rivers. The two longest, the Thames and the Severn, are only a little more than 200 miles long. The Clyde, Forth, Humber, Mersey, Bevern and Thames rivers all have estuaries that make fine harbours. Cities on these estuaries serve as centres of ocean and inland commerce.

George: Hi, Pat. So, how are you doing?

Pat: Oh, hello, George. School is so crazy these days, and when I’m not at school, I’m at work.

George: Hey, listen. I’m getting together with Natalie and Will tonight, and a few of our other friends are going to join us.

Pat: Oh, really?

George: Yeah. And, we’re… well, we’re going out to eat and then watch a movie. Why don’t you come with us?

Pat: Hey, I’d love to, but I have to cram for a test tomorrow.

George: Ah, come on. We’re planning on having dinner around 6 p.m. and then seeing a movie at 7:30. We should be home by 11 p.m. Or maybe 11:30 at the latest. I mean you’re always saying that you don’t have many friends or any exciting love affair… Come on!

Pat: I don’t think I’d better. I haven’t been feeling fell lately.

George: That is because you study too much. Well, relax. And it’s Natalie’s birthday, too. And we’re throwing her a small birthday party after the movie. Come on. Best friends always stick together.

Pat: Oh. Okay.

George: Great. I’ll pick you up at about 5:30.

Pat: Okay. See you then, but I have to be back by 10:30.

George: Ah, 10:30… Midnight. It’s all the same. See you at 5:30.
