Today, the mass media play an important role in our daily lives. People get information from newspapers, TV news programmes, podcasts, and social networks. Every day we read posts, watch videos, and listen to different opinions. However, not everything we see online is true, is it? That is why it is important to know the difference between a fact and an opinion and to recognise fake news.
Last September, students at Green Valley School started The Truth Seekers Media Club. Their goal was not only to share interesting stories about school life but also to help other students become responsible media users. Their English teacher believed that the project would improve their language skills as well as their communication, creativity, and critical thinking. It was a great idea, wasn't it?
The club created its own online channel, where students posted news about school events, sports competitions, charity projects, and interviews with teachers. Some members enjoyed writing articles, while others recorded podcasts or made a weekly vlog. Thanks to their creative ideas and honest reporting, the channel soon had more than 500 subscribers. That was quite an achievement, wasn't it?
One day, a message appeared on a social network saying that Green Valley School would close for two weeks because of building repairs. Many students believed the story and shared it without checking it. They should have checked the information first, shouldn't they? The members of The Truth Seekers Media Club, however, decided to investigate the information before sharing it. They visited the school's official website and spoke to the head teacher. Soon they discovered that the message was fake news. It wasn't difficult to verify the information, was it?
The next day, the club published a post called "Fact or Opinion?" In it, they explained that a fact can be checked and proved, while an opinion expresses what someone thinks or believes. They also reminded their readers that exciting news is not always true and that reliable information should always be checked before it is shared online.
The project became one of the most successful school activities. The students realised that good journalists do more than create interesting content. They ask questions, verify facts, and help people make informed decisions. The members of The Truth Seekers Media Club learned that using the media means not only sharing information but also being responsible for it. We all want to be responsible media users, don't we?
