Teen Chores in a Digital World
About a year ago, 16-year-old Nick decided that he needed to become more responsible at home. His parents had always reminded him to tidy his room, walk the dog, and take out the garbage, but Nick kept forgetting. One day his father suggested creating a “chore-tracker” on Nick’s phone. At first Nick thought it was a silly idea — who needs an app to remind them to wash the dishes?
However, things quickly changed. Nick created a colourful schedule and set notifications for every task. Soon he discovered that having small reminders actually reduced stress. He stopped arguing with his parents and even started doing extra jobs such as watering the plants and helping to cook dinner on weekends. His younger sister Emily was so impressed that she asked him to make a tracker for her too.
Nick believes that using digital tools wisely can make teenagers more organised. “I’ve learned that responsibility doesn’t appear magically — you have to train it just like a muscle,” he says. His parents couldn’t agree more.
Why did Nick create a “chore-tracker”?
