Text: A Year of Disasters
Last year was very difficult for many people around the world because of natural disasters. In January, a cyclone hit a small island. The strong wind and heavy rain destroyed hundreds of homes. Many people lost everything, but they tried to survive.
In March, a volcano erupted near a village in South America. Lava and ash covered the houses. The villagers had to calm down and leave quickly. They put on warm clothes and ran to the mountains.
Later, in May, there was a flood in Asia. Rivers rose and water covered the streets. Some people drowned because they couldn’t swim. Others got sick from disease after the water spread.
In summer, a terrible drought and famine hit Africa. People had no water and food. Many children began to starve. Aid workers tried to help, but it was hard to get through to small villages.
In November, a tsunami followed an earthquake near the sea. The big waves buried houses and cars. People said they had never seen anything like this before.
Despite all the problems, people didn’t give up. They helped each other and worked hard to rebuild. Everyone was tired, but they tried to keep on going. One man said, “We lost a lot, but we look forward to better days.”
