A long friendship

Friends – we’ve all got them and we couldn’t manage without them. When my editor recently sent me to the city of Manchester to interview two women about their long friendship, I didn’t expect to see a 93-year-old and a 25-year-old. As soon as I walked into the hotel coffee shop for the interview, I noticed the two women having a conversation and thought they were a grandmother and granddaughter who were visiting the city. Imagine my surprise when they waved to me after noticing my recording equipment.

Anna, who’s just turned 25, first met 93-year-old Molly when Molly came into the supermarket where Anna worked. Anna worked there at the bakery counter a few evenings a week during her time as a university student. Explaining about their friendship, Anna says that when they first they exchanged a few words, she didn’t think any more about it. Then she noticed that Molly was coming into the shop more often but not buying anything, even though the prices there were low. It didn’t take long for Anna to understand that Molly was lonely and enjoyed having a chat with the shop assistants. Things grew from there when Anna invited Molly to have a picnic with her in the park one weekend. Six years later, they’re best friends.

‘I’ve loved hearing all Molly’s stories. She’s lived such an interesting life,’ says Anna. ‘And we always laugh at the same things.’ Molly soon became an important person when Anna needed help making decisions about her studies or career. ‘I don’t have grandparents and my parents live far away. Molly's house is ten minutes away, so I can pop round there for a quick chat when I feel like it.’

Molly admits that loneliness was a problem for her after her husband died; she missed company and daily conversation, especially at mealtimes. ‘As soon as I saw Anna, I knew she was a warm, loving person. I could tell from her face. I’ll never forget that weekend in the park when we sat eating fish and chips. We really got on well and I had so much fun!’ Molly invites Anna for dinner once a week, and they regularly go to the cinema and museums together.

‘Anna isn’t a blood relation but she’s no different from family. Our relationship is strong and it’s even better than family because we chose each other,’ says Molly.

How did the writer first come into contact with the two women?
