AN AMAZING LANGUAGE LEARNER
Alex Rawlings is a student at Oxford University and has learned to speak 11 languages: English, Greek, German, Spanish, Polish, Dutch, Afrikaans, French, Hebrew, Catalan, and Italian. Last year, he won a competition to find the student who speaks the most languages in Britain. Since then, Alex has been on radio stations around the world and the BBC has made a video of him speaking all 11 of his languages for their website.
On the video, Alex explains that he’s been interested in languages all his life. Greek is his favourite because his mother is half Greek and he has spoken the language since he was a young child. He became interested in other languages after he travelled to different countries for holidays and his father’s job. He wanted to be able to talk to people but couldn’t.
When he was 14, he went on a trip to Holland with his family. Afterwards, he bought some Dutch language books and CDs, and the next time he went, he was able to speak to the people there. That was the beginning of his language learning adventure, and he says he has not finished yet. He plans to start learning Arabic next. Alex says that he has already made many new friends through his languages and that learning new ones gets easier each time you do it. He started a blog a few months ago where he shares his ideas about language learning and gives advice to people who send in questions.
Alex has been on TV and radio since he won a language competition.
