Travelling Around Ukraine Bohdan was ten years old when his parents decided that their summer would be different. Instead of staying at home in Kyiv, they packed their old blue car with backpacks, sandwiches, and a map of Ukraine. “We are going to see our country with our own eyes,” Bohdan’s father said with a smile. At first, Bohdan thought it would be boring. He imagined endless roads and long talks between adults. But on the very first day, he looked out of the car window and saw golden sunflower fields stretching farther than he could imagine. They looked like little suns dancing under the blue sky. Their first stop was Lviv. Bohdan walked through narrow streets filled with the smell of fresh coffee and sweet pastries. Street musicians played violins in the squares, and old buildings seemed to whisper stories from hundreds of years ago. “This city feels like a fairy tale,” Bohdan said. Then the family travelled to the Carpathian Mountains. Bohdan climbed green hills, listened to rushing rivers, and tasted warm banosh cooked over a fire by local villagers. One evening, an old Hutsul man played the trembita, and its deep sound echoed through the mountains. “It sounds like the mountains are singing,” Bohdan whispered. Farther south, near Odesa, Bohdan saw the Black Sea for the first time. The waves sparkled in the sunlight, and seagulls flew above the harbor. He spent hours collecting smooth shells while his mother told stories about sailors and travelers. But the most important moment happened later, in a small village in Poltava Oblast. Bohdan met an elderly grandmother sitting near her house, embroidering a traditional towel. “Every region of Ukraine has its own colors and patterns,” she explained kindly. “But together they create one beautiful picture.” That night, Bohdan thought deeply about her words. During their journey, he had seen different landscapes, heard different accents, eaten different foods, and met people with different traditions. Yet everywhere they went, people welcomed them warmly, shared stories, laughed together, and loved their homeland. When the family finally returned home, Bohdan stood on the balcony and looked at the evening sky. “I found something special about Ukraine,” he told his parents. “What is it?” his mother asked. Bohdan smiled. “It’s not only the mountains, the sea, or the old cities. The special thing is the people and how all the different parts come together like one big family.” His father nodded proudly. And from that summer on, whenever Bohdan looked at the blue and yellow flag, he no longer saw just colours. He saw sunflower fields, mountain songs, sea waves, ancient streets, warm smiles — and the heart of his country.
