Task 1. Read the text and choose the correct answer for each question
The Midnight Celebration
It was midnight on New Year’s Eve, and the small local town was ready for the big party. In the square stood a tall evergreen tree, decorated with shiny lights and colorful balls. The tree was meant to represent hope and goodness for the coming year.
Families gathered near the big fireplace built in the center of the square. The mayor wanted to provide warmth and joy for everyone. Children laughed as they pulled crackers that made a loud sound, almost like to smash a plate.
At exactly twelve o’clock, the clock made a loud stroke. According to tradition, people hugged each other and wished for happiness. Everyone tried to fill the air with positive words.
The celebration had a special pattern: first the music, then the fireworks, and finally the sharing of food. It was common for people to receive small gifts, like sweets or candles. These gifts were meant to link families together and to relate to the idea that everyone belongs to the same community.
