Once upon a time, there was a King called Danylo who lived in Halychyna. King Danylo was extremely rich, even for a king — so rich, in fact, that he had a goldsmith, whose job it was to make gold and silver coins and beautiful treasures for the King.
The King was very careful with his gold and the goldsmith had to walk all day long locked in a special room to which only the King had the key. In the morning the goldsmith went into the room, all day long he worked there, and he came out only late in the evening. It is true that some – perhaps many – people would hate this kind of life but the goldsmith was very happy. In fact, he used to say that gold was the King of the World.
King Danylo tried to change his goldsmith’s mind. For King, Danylo was wise as well as wealthy and he knew that other things were more important than gold. “Bread”, said the King, “is more important than gold”.
One morning when King Danylo opened the goldsmith’s room he saw a message written on the wall. It said “Bread is mud…gold and silver rule the world.” The goldsmith smiled, thinking the argument was won, and went to work, working all day alone as usual.
Meanwhile, King Danylo received some terrible news: his kingdom was under attack from his enemies! Forgetting about everything else, the King called his army to war and went out to battle his enemies.
Finely, King Danylo was victorious and returned to his castle, expecting to see his friend the goldsmith there to welcome him, but, to his surprise, the goldsmith was nowhere to be seen. Then the King remembered that he had locked the door to the goldsmith’s room! The goldsmith was dead but there was a message for the King written on the wall, six words in bright golden letters: “Gold is mud, bread is King”. The goldsmith had learned his lesson too late.
