Teacher's Guide
Before You Watch (Warm-up)
Objective: To activate prior knowledge, build interest, and lower the students' affective filter (anxiety).
B1 Relevance: At this level, students can express personal opinions and describe abstract concepts (like fear or intuition) using relatively simple language.
Vocabulary Match
Objective: To pre-teach essential contextual vocabulary before listening to prevent cognitive overload.
B1 Relevance: B1 learners need to transition from basic vocabulary to thematic words (e.g., coffin, grave) that help them navigate specific movie genres or stories.
While Watching (Listening Comprehension)
Objective: To practice listening for specific details (close listening) using a high-stakes, authentic dialogue.
B1 Relevance: B1 students should be able to catch the main points of clear standard speech. Haley Joel Osment (Cole) speaks very slowly and clearly in this scene, making it highly accessible.
Video Analysis & Understanding
Objective: To develop global message comprehension and decode non-verbal communication (body language).
B1 Relevance: B1 learners must move beyond literal word tracking to interpreting mood, tone, and character emotions.
Grammar & Speaking Focus
Objective: To contextualize grammar rules using the media clip and transition students from passive listening to active production.
Grammar: Distinguishing between the Present Continuous (temporary visual actions in the clip) and the Present Simple (the ghosts' habits) is a core B1 grammar milestone.
Speaking: B1 students need practice entering unstructured, creative conversations (roleplay) with a partner using conversational frames.
