The best and worst film adaptations

We don't recognise many of our favourite books when they get to the cinema. Are there any film adaptations which are really good? Here's what cinema-goers had to say:

• “I usually will not see a movie if I really liked the book. A friend talked me into seeing The Horse Whisperer. Here they took a good book and made a bad movie. The whole point got lost somewhere in lots of shots of Robert Redford's face!”

• “I have loved most movies made from books. I always like to read the book first, when I see a movie made from a book. It doesn't worry me that endings are often changed, or that things I thought were important are left out. My favourite? Gone With The Wind.”

• “I agree that sometimes books turned into movies don't work. But I think Stephen King's The Shining is a better film than the book. Kubrick and Nicholson did a great job there!”

• “Some film adaptations of books are wonderful. I think the classics, like Sense and Sensibility, are great. They offer pictures of the way life was and the things people used to do. When the characters and scenery are brought to life we really can enjoy these stories.”

• “One of my favourite movie adaptations is Clueless - a modern-day version of Jane Austen's Emma in a Californian high school. I thought it was clever, and very funny.”

• “I recently watched Message in a Bottle -an adaptation of the book by Nicholas Sparks. It tells the story of a woman who finds a sad love letter in a bottle on a beach. She wants to find its author. The ending was the best part of the film, and it was much better than the book ending.”
