Lesson type: Skills-based lesson


Lesson goals:

*Learning objectives:

- to practice pronunciation activities;

- to practice some basic topic vocabulary;

- to use topic grammar structures in practice activities;

- to motivate situational speaking and reading activities;

- to practice answering questions;

*Developing and Educational goals:

- to develop English learning motivation;

- to use English as the classroom language;

- to develop pupil’s skills;

- to develop pupil’s thinking abilities

- to improve pupil’s brain working activities.


Methods of learning: pair and group work, lexical and grammar activities.


Learning outcomes: by the end of the lesson learners will be able to:

  • speak about their hobbies using Gerund;

  • ask and answer about their friend’s hobbies using 3 questions: What hobby is it ? Why do people like to do it?Where can people do it?


Lesson equipment: blackboard, handouts, pictures, flashcards.


Lesson plan

І. Introduction (Lesson goals presentation)

1.1. Greeting

Are you ready for the lesson? Let’s greet each other.

Wake body, wake mind

Work, play, seek, find,

Learn the rules, speak, listen to

Sing, dance and do.

Good morning now!

T: Take your seats. Can you tell me: how are you today and why?

T-Cl

Pupils answer: I am good/bad/fine/tired/sad/hungry

because

  • It is a good/bad day.

  • I have got a nice/bad mark today.

  • It is my birthday today.

  • I want a sandwich/burger.

  • I have got no/ some troubles.

T: Thank you very much. I hope some of you will change their mood by the end of the lesson.


1.2. Warming up

T: Look out of the window. Can you see butterflies outside the window? Why not?

What season is it now?

What month is it now?

What is the weather like in autumn?

What colors and where can you see in autumn?

What do children like doing in autumn?

What do you like doing?

What do you think, what is the theme of our lesson?


1.3. Aim

T: Yes, you are right. Today we will speak about hobbies using Gerund and different constructions.

We summarize everything we have been learning during our lessons and we are going to discuss different hobbies. Is everything clear for you? Be ready for hard work.


1.4. Phonetic Drills (tongue twisters are in pupil’s vocabularies or teacher can write them on the blackboard)

T: Let’s start with your favorite tongue-twisters.

  • I saw Susie doing shopping in a shiny shoe shop.

  • Car Collector collected colorful coins.

  • Darla is drawing dangerous dragons.

P1 – Cl, P2- Cl, P3 – Cl.


II. The Main Part of the Lesson

P: What hobbies are mentioned in these tongue twisters? (Pupils answer).


2.1. Revision of vocabulary

T: Let’s repeat the words about different types of hobby. Look at cards and say what hobby it is.

Work in Chain ” – pupils one by one say the words on the cards, work in chain.

T – Cl

Words: singing, cooking, watching cartoons, collecting, swimming, reading, gardening, taking photos, playing musical instrument, dancing, painting, listening to music etc.

Memory game” – look at these two children for 7 seconds then be ready to tell what things girl doesn’t like doing and boy likes doing.

Girl (dislikes): singing, cooking, watching TV, reading, collecting dolls, swimming.


Boy (likes): dancing, gardening, taking photos, listening to music, drawing, playing the piano.


T: What hobbies from these do you like or don’t like?

Pupils answer.

I don’t like…

2.2. Revision of Grammar Constructions

T: What other constructions except like/dislike can we use when we speak about hobbies? (Checking Home task: pupils had to write their own sentences with these constructions)

Pupils answer:

crazy about ….

good at ….

keen on ….

like ….

fond of ….

interested in ….

T: What do we use in all these constructions? (Gerund). What is Gerund? When do we use it? What features does it have? How do we translate it in Ukrainian?

Activity “Translator”

T: I propose you to try your forces as translators. You have to translate into Ukrainian or English, using Gerund and words about hobbies.


I like reading books.

Ти захоплюєшся малюванням.

He likes playing football and basketball.

Вона не любить грати в теніс.

We are not interested in traveling.

Я люблю співати, але не люблю танцювати.

My grandmother is fond of gardening.

Мій тато шаленіє від їзди на автомобілі.

His brother does not like swimming in the river.

У його сестри добре виходить грати в шахи.


(Sentences are in the box, pupils take the sentences and translate them into opposite language)

T: Very good translators, you have done this task. Now imagine that you are detectives. Your task is to find mistakes in the sentence and correct it, explaining.

Activity “Detectives” – correct the mistakes.

  1. My mom am fond of cooking. (is)

  2. I am crazy about ride a bike. (riding)

  3. Your parents is keen on collecting stamps. (are)

  4. Her sister like speaking English. (likes)

  5. Our granny is good on playing the piano. (at)

  6. She hate diving. (hates)

  8. You am not good at volleyball. (are)

2.3. Physical Warming Up

T: I think you are a little bit tired. Let’s have a rest. Stand up and dance.

2.4. Reading. Group Work.

T: Now, you will have some reading task about hobbies.

1. Your task is to match the patterns of the puzzle, read the text on it and guess what hobby is it.

2. Prepare 3 questions with the special words What, Where, Why about the hobby and ask other groups. So, please, be very attentive.

Group work.


Card 1. People like to visit different cities, towns and historical places. Some people even visit other countries. They can travel by car, by plane, by train, by bus or on foot. This hobby helps them to learn history, geography and traditions of different people and countries.


Questions that pupils can ask:

- What hobby is it?

- Why do people like to do it?

- Where can people do it?


Group1: Travelling





C ard 2. People like to spend their free time near the rivers or lakes . They often go there with their friends or relatives. They can have a picnic there. They go usually there in summer but some people like to go there in winter too. Also they can boil fish broth (soup) after going there.

- What hobby is it?

- Why do people like to do it?

- Where can people do it?


Group 2: Fishing



Card 3. (For the weakest group)

I t is a very beautiful and good kind of hobby. You can visit dancing club after lessons or dance at home. If you can dance well, you can show it at the disco, at the parties with your friends!

- What hobby is it?

- Why do people like to do it?

- Where can people do it?

Group 3: Dancing

2.5. Speaking. “Interview”

(It can be pair or individual work)

T . Have you got such hobbies like these? Let’s find out. You will tell us about your favorite activities, hobbies, using the questions.

III. The Final Part of the Lesson.
