Good morning! Greet our guests. What colour are you today?
Bored or sad – pink
Nervous – yellow
Now let’s start! First of all we’ll do some exercises for your organs of articulation because as you know your tongue and lips can perfectly work for your native language, but in order to speak a foreign one you have to train them. So get your mirrors ready and off we go!
I love English з висунутим язиком та без.
ІІ. Мотивація навчальної діяльності.
Let’s look at the board. You see the words by famous people. What does it stand for?
“It leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.” Ibn Battuta
“It gives you a chance to understand that every one of a hundred thousand cities around the world has its own special sunset and it is worth going there.” Ruy Murakami
“It is never a matter of money but of courage.” Paulo Coelho
Absolutely, travelling! Travelling is also a way of spending your leisure time, so today we’re going to discuss this fascinating topic and since most of your journeys are still ahead we’ll work on the ways to talk about future.
There are some idioms at the board. Which one is the most suitable for our today’s topic?
Use your loaf
When pigs fly
What goes around, goes around
Two’s a company; three’s a crowd
East or west home is best
Variety is the spice of life.
Lera: Well, it’s not an easy question. Sometimes, I think I will get a chance to travel, only when pigs will fly. I feel like you need to use your loaf to plan your travel carefully. But “Variety is the spice of life” really reflects the idea of travelling. It’s like eating borsch every day. Even if you like this dish, one day you’ll get fed up with it. Travelling gives us a wonderful opportunity to change our scenery, our everyday routine.
Masha: And I think East or West home is best is better. I guess that home is a small world where one lives. For me there is no place like home.
Lera: Yes. But in order to understand this you have to travel.
Teacher: That’s right! But what are the reasons to travel. Here’s a spidergram. Let’s complete it.
- observe a lifestyle of local people
- practice languages
- enjoy architectural pieces
- relax and forget about your routine
- explore new cultures
- taste new cuisines
- to study
- for work
- to enjoy natural wonders
ІІІ. Перевірка домашнього завдання
Teacher: Ok. Your home task for today was to bring a thing which you or your friends/relatives brought from another country and tell us if this country is worth visiting.
Lera: I brought this magnet from Kemer, Turkey. Actually, I brought a lot of souvenirs, but only this one always reminds me of my trip as I can see it every time I open and close my fridge.
Sure this country is worth visiting. As a meeting point of various empires and a crossroads between two continents, Turkey is a country brimming history. There you can enjoy great picturesque breath-taking views and meet interesting and open-hearted people who preserve their culture and are always eager to share it with you.
If one day you have a chance, do go to Turkey, because there’s so much to see and do in this fascinating country.
Vasyl: Unfortunately, I still haven’t had a chance to go abroad, but my sister went to Turkey last year. She brought a lot of souvenirs and this flag was among them.
So why go there? First of all, not only is Turkey gorgeous, its cities and landscapes are also incredibly diverse. You can spend your weekend either on a ski slope or on the shore of the Mediterranean. You can travel in time and visit stunning mosques, ancient castles and other giant archeological treasures.
And of course, food. Turkish cuisine needs no comments. To cut it short, it’s better once to see than hundred times to hear.
Hena: In 2012, I went to Georgia and brought this amulet. To be honest, this country absolutely blew my mind. If you have a dream about going somewhere, that’s the perfect place to be.
So what’s so magical about it? It’s a mix of everything, I reckon. The warm-hearted people, the stunning countryside, Tbilisi’s nightlife… It’s hard to describe. It’s a journey into humanity and kindness, a gem you will not regret visiting.
Artem: Personally I have never been abroad, but my grandmother went to Moscow, Russia. She was amazed by the city, and I’ve made up my mind to visit the capital of Russia one day. So why?
It is the fifth biggest city of our planet. With numerous beautiful architectural pieces, the city is a tourists’ paradise. There are hundreds of theatres and museums, nice cafes with delicious food, shops, parks and the most gorgeous underground system in the world. During any season, any hour of day, Moscow thrills its visitors and I’m really dying to go there.
Sasha: This souvenir is from Italy. My sister brought it for me. Her stories were amazing and now I can’t wait to go there myself.
I’m pretty sure I could come up with at least a hundred different reasons why one should visit Italy. It certainly does have much to offer: spectacular sites, ancient ruins, wonderful museums, stunning mountains, great beaches and gorgeous nature. It is so unique, that definitely it’s a dream destination. And when I come, I’m sure it will be a “wow” moment in my life.
Katia: Last summer I went to Macedonia. I took part in a dancing festival, but I had enough time to enjoy this wonderful country. I felt comfortable everywhere I went. With its little villages, beautiful lakes and mountains mixed with cheap prices and exciting history, Macedonia deserves attention. I’m sure you should add it to your destination list.
Masha: When I was ten, I and my parents went to France.
In my opinion, Paris may be the best city in the world. But what is it about that city that makes it so damn appealing? Well that’s not an easy question to answer, but I think there are a few reasons.
It must be the most romantic place in the world, the most sophisticated and glamorous atmosphere.
Strolling along the streets, stopping at a café for some coffee or cheese, visiting Disneyland and of course seeing the Eiffel Tower for the first time... Agree or not, there is an undeniable allure that Paris exudes attracting people from around the world. And no doubt, you have to experience it yourself.
Dima: I guess it’s quite obvious where this thing is from. A friend of mine brought it from the USA last summer. I’m sure everyone wants to visit this country at least once, and I’m not an exception.
First of all, the USA is a melting pot, a jigsaw of 50 diverse states, so going there can give you a chance to get acquainted with a lot of various cultures. There are tons of museums and other fascinating places to explore. Although some people won’t agree with me, I consider American food delicious. Moreover, natural views are breath-taking. I don’t know… New York, Las Vegas, California… I’m getting goose bumps. I hope one day my dream will come true.
Teacher: Ok, thank you! But what about Ukraine? Is our country worth visiting?
Sasha: Our Motherland is a wonderful country which has many treasures – long history, magnificent nature, hearty people.
Dima: It’s not easy to describe Ukraine with few words, because it’s large and one region differs from another.
Lera: Climb Goverla mountain in the Carpathians, try the tastiest coffee in cozy restaurants of Lviv, be impressed by beauty of Kyiv, feel the romantic atmosphere of Uman, walk through the largest square of Europe in Kharkiv, see with your own eyes cole mines of Donetsk, relax with tender touch of waters of the Sea of Azov – and you’ll understand that life is really wonderful and colourful.
Hena: And I’m proud to say “Hey, man! That’s my Motherland! The most beautiful country in the world!”
Teacher: Nice! And now I ask you to be honest and objective and try and put yourselves a grade for your homework. Oh, I see. Actually, I have the same opinion.
ІV. Основна частина
Teacher: And now I’d like to invite you to a wonderful country. But which one? You’ll learn it if you solve the crossword. You’ll hear people speaking different languages and if you write all the words you’ll be able to read the name of the country (England). Christmas is already in the air and that is one of the reasons I want to go there. Because they are carrying out a Christmas gift experiment there.
The journey is going to be long and you’re a little bit tired. Christmas is a magic time and I feel like a magician as well, ‘cause I brought you … snowballs! Now take a card, find your pair and try to pick up the snowball using the body parts called out by the teacher:
Elbow and elbow
Foot and foot
Knee and knee
Forearm and elbow
Foot and elbow
Knee and elbow
Forehead and back of hand
Toe and finger
Підготовка до прослуховування
Welcome to England! You are going to watch a short video with the title ‘The Christmas gift experiment’. (Ask them to spend a few minutes in pairs to think about what the experiment might be and to write their ideas. In a minute share the ideas )
Ok . Let’s watch a video to learn the truth. But before we watch I’d ask you to do the exercise and put your grades onto your sheets.
(Go to https://learnenglishteens.britishcouncil.org/studybreak/videozone/christmas-gift-experiment As a class, watch the video up to 00:39 seconds.)
Let’s discuss with them how similar or different your ideas were to the video.
Введення нового матеріалу
On the slide, there are the following two statements:
- It’s going to rain this weekend.
- In 50 years’ time, we’ll all be learning English using virtual reality headsets.
What is the function of the two statements (they are both ways of predicting something in the future.)
Закріплення нового матеріалу
Work in pairs and write three or four sentences predicting what you think will / is going to happen next in the video. ( a maximum time-limit of 5 minutes).
Share your ideas. (мабуть, не треба)
Here are copies of the student worksheet, and you can see it on a projector.
There a several expressions, or chunks of lexis that can be used to express certainty or uncertainty when making predictions.
Certain - 5, 9
Not certain - 2, 6, 10
In between - 1, 3, 4, 7, 8
Look at the example on your worksheet. You should read the 10 statements and decide if they are used to express certainty, uncertainty or something in between the two.
Go back to the original sentences you wrote and to rewrite them using some of the expressions from the worksheet.
Перегляд відео та перевірка розуміння змісту відео
Now we’ll watch the second part of the video. After that you’ll have to cope with two exercises. Have a look and if you have any questions, you can ask them right now.
What are your results? Let’s compare your predictions.
Фізкультхвилинка для очей
And now look at your partner sitting in front of you. Write about a gift you’re going to give to your partner. Predict and write down what you think your partner will give you, ie what you will receive.
Do your notes and reality match?
V. Підбиття підсумків
I’m a still a magician and I brought some sweets for you. But you can take only one according to your today’s feelings.
2) Самооцінювання та оцінювання діяльності на уроці.
