Name of the activity: ‘Mosquito killer’ game

Age group: 5-9

Aim: to learn or revise letters / sounds

Materials: a mosquito killer (like our grannies have in the villages), pictures of mosquitoes with letters or transcription sounds written on their wings.

Preparation: The teacher draws or sticks (it is sometimes better to prepare the pictures beforehand to save time) twenty-six mosquitoes on the board. If the aim of the game is to practice letters, the letters are written on the mosquitoes’ wings. If the aim of the game is to practice sounds, transcription signs are written on the wings.

Procedure:

The class is divided into two teams. Pupils in turns go to the board, listen to the teacher pronouncing a letter/sound and in 7 seconds they must “kill” it (beat with a mosquito killer). If s/he does it correctly, s/he wins a point. The team with more points win.

It is usually fun to kill the mosquitoes with a loud sound, other children can buzz at this moment (or only the pupils of the opposing team).

What learning styles this activity addresses:

For visual learners: letters, transcription signs, pictures of funny mosquitoes.

For auditory learners: Teacher’s commands, buzzing sound of mosquitoes

For kinesthetic learners: “killing” the mosquitoes with a mosquito killer, going to the board.

Our comment:

This activity is great for all types of learners, although the auditory learners can be distracted by the buzzing sound more than others so this element might be omitted in some classes.

In another version of this game two students (one from each team) come up to the blackboard at the same time and the one who is the first to ‘slap’ the picture at hearing the letter/sound/word, wins a point for his team.
