Possible answers:

  1. Many men, many minds. All people are different and they prefer spending their free time in different ways. I'd like to say that it's hard to imagine our life without books. Books play such a great role in the development of personality. They help as to forget our daily problems and to pretend we travel to the past, future and to many different, wonderful places that we can’t visit in reality. I am also sure that books are our good friends and teachers. From them we get to know the life around us better, they teach us how to tell right from wrong, to love our Motherland, to understand friendship, people's feelings. So, they teach us how to live. As for me I like to read different kinds of books.

  2. First of all, watching movies is a source for me to release stress. By laughing in comedies, crying in tragic movies and freaking out in scary movies, I learned to express emotions and by watching people having social relationships, falling in love and hanging out with their friends, I learned to love, make friends and hang out with those friends I made. Secondly, movies widened my knowledge on general information. In movies, I often encounter knowledge I have never known before.

  3. My hobby is painting and drawing. I have finished art school and now I paint and draw in my free time. I depict things that have impressed me deeply: beautiful flowers, poetic landscapes, ancient ruins. I like to paint portraits as well. It is very important to catch a person in a moment of action, feeling, perception and record that moment. For me painting is a means to understand the beauty and harmony of the surrounding world, a way to express my own emotions, feelings and perception of life.

III. Main Body.

1. Television.

a) Teacher: Nowadays television takes a special place in people’s life. In the middle of the 20th century one of the main characters of legendary film “Moskva slezam ne verit” said: “Television is our future. There will be nothing in future but only television. No books, no newspapers, no theatres.”Modern people changed their minds.(~ 2 min.)

/ Quotations on the blackboard/

  • All television is educational television. The question: what is teaching?

(Nicholas Johnson, Professor of the Yale University)

  • Television! Teacher, mother, secret lover!

(The Simpsons)

-Television is simply day- dreaming.

(Lee Lovinger, Manager Software Development).

b) Group Work. Writing. Many men, many minds. Now, dear students, we are going to decide for ourselves, first of all, what is television: one of the greatest achievements of the twentieth century or “one-eyed monster”? You’ll work in groups. We need two groups. Your time is three minutes. After that you should make a presentation of negative and positive sides of television. The first group will get a green piece of paper; it means you should find as many positive sides as you can, and the second group will get a red piece of paper, you have to write only negative sides.

/ Group Work/ ( ~ 7 min)

Possible answers:

Group1.

Television helps us to learn more about the world and to know and see many new things. Television can often present information to us in a more effective way than books can. It can also make things more memorable.

It entertains us. In is an enjoyable way to relax. For millions of people around the world, television is a source of companionship and helps them to cope with everyday life.

It has increased the popularity of sports and arts.

Now this medium of communication allows people to see and speak with other if they are separated by thousand kilometers. TV bridges between Russia and the USA once were very popular.

Group 2.

Television can make us passive. We don’t have to think and our brains become lazy.

It encourages us to buy things that we don’t need, and can make us unhappy with our own lives.

It takes time away from activities such as reading, conversation, and games.

It gives a false picture of society. A study in 1994 showed that people who watched a lot of television are more afraid of crime. They also think that there is a lot more crime than there really is.

Some critics say that television makes people violent. A ten-year study in the United States showed that children who watch violent television programs are more likely to be violent themselves.

c) Speaking.( ~ 4 min.)

Teacher: Anyway, television is a part of our life. We spend a lot of time watching different programs. Sometimes we just switch from channel to channel trying to find something interesting. There are lots of programs, films and shows, but not all of them are worth seeing. Let’s watch some photos of popular TV shows. Your task is to name the type of program and give short remarks about it. For example: documentary- a program that gives you facts and information about a serious subject, such as history, science or social program.

/ Slide Show/

Possible answers:

  • Wildlife Programme (a television program about animals and plants).

  • Soap Opera (a television story about group of people and their lives, which is broadcast regularly for many years).

  • Cartoon (a film, especially a story for children that is made by photographing a series of drawing, so they seem to move).

  • Sport News (a program that tells us about all important events which are happening in the world of sport).

  • Cooking Show (program that demonstrates the process of creating different dishes).

  • Talk Show (a program in which people talk about themselves and answer the questions about their lives, discuss different issues and give their opinions).

  • Quiz Show (a program in which people or teams compete against each other by answering the questions).

  • Reality Show (a program that describes people’s life in some difficult situations where they try to overcome some trials.

2. Listening.

Teacher: We should say that films are loved by everyone. What is your favourite film or maybe film genre? (Horror film, comedy, sitcom, action film, detective) Where can we watch films we like? (On TV, online, at the cinema). Now we’ll listen to the dialogue of three friends. But firstly, some pre- listening tasks.

a) 1 Pre-listening task.

Can you write one word in each gap to complete these questions?

  1. What’s ______ last film you saw?(the)

  2. Was it at the cinema, _____ was it on TV or DVD?(or)

  3. Why did you choose _____ see it?(to)

  8. Who played _____ main parts? (the)

  9. Have you seen those actors in _____films? (other, many)

  10. Did it ______ a lot of special effects? (have, include, use).

b) Read the pairs of sentence carefully. Decide if they have the same or different meaning.

1) A) The weather was bad in the morning, but then it turned out nice.

B) The day began with bad weather but it got better. (Same. Turn out=become)

2) A) I really want something to eat.

B) I’m feeling very hungry. (Same. If you are hungry, it’s because you want to eat)

3) A) I think my grandfather’s stories are more interesting, than history books.

B) I prefer learning about history from proper books to listening to my grandfather’s stories. (Different. In “B” thing that you prefer is better or more interesting).

4) A) I wonder if my brother will go to the concert.

B) I expect my brother will want to go to the concert. (Different. Wonder- you really don’t know, expect-you believe that it will happen)

c) Listening to the dialogue.” Exam Excellence”.p.99.

Maria: So, Anna, what did you think of the film?

Anna: Well, Maria, when David suggested going…

David: Oh, I see. Blame me, is it?

Anna: Oh, no. I agreed to come, although, generally speaking, it’s just not my kind of film, you know, historical. However, it turned out pretty well, as far as I’m concerned.

David: That’s a relief, than. What about you, Maria?

Maria: Not bad, I guess. Actually, you know, I’d forgotten to eat before we went, so I kept wanting it to end, so I could go and get something to eat- very silly. It stopped me concentrating properly- the film seemed to go on too long.

Anna: And you David?

David: Well, it’s true, it was long, but that’s because it needed to be, I think. It’s a complicated story, if you see what I mean.

Maria: Hmm, which doesn’t make it a good one, I’m afraid. But the setting of the film, and the changes between locations were all good, and kept you involved –actually, in spite of the story, if you see what I mean.

Anna: May be, you should do what I need then…

David: Which is…?

Anna: Read the book. I read it I suppose a year ago and loved it. That was the other thing that made me want to go. But the book is still more interesting version. So, do try it, Maria.

Maria: OK, maybe, I will.

David: I don’t know about the book, though I wondered about the DVD for my sister’s birthday, which is coming soon. But she doesn’t like the small screen, so I’m going to buy her a couple of tickets instead.

Maria: She should like that.

Anna: Yeah.

David: Now, what about seeing if…

d) After-listening task. True or false (explain your choice)

1) Anna was looking forward to seeing the film. False (She says it wasn’t her kind of the film. It means she wasn’t looking forward to seeing it.)

2) Maria felt hungry during the film. True (Maria says that she’d forgotten to eat before we went, so I kept wanting it to end)

3) David thinks the film was very long. True (David says:” it’s true, it was long, but that’s because it needed to be, I think. It’s a complicated story”)

4) Maria says the story was very interesting. False (She says that it doesn’t make it a good one)

5) Anna thinks the book is more interesting than the film. True. (She has read the book and has seen the film and can say that the book is still more interesting version.)

6) David is going to buy the film on DVD as a present for his sister. False. (He thought about that, but he knows his sister doesn’t like small screen, so he is going to buy her a couple of tickets instead.)

3. Creative Writing. Now, we’ll play the game “Script Writer”. You’ll get sheets of paper with incomplete script of our future film. You should create the end of the script and introduce to your friends. Everybody will be a member of script group. We’ ll have three groups. Before we start, we must read the beginning of the story.(~ 5 min.)
