Lesya Ukrainka (Larysa Petrivna Kosach) was born on February 25, 1871. in Novohrad-Volynskyi. Her mother, the writer Olena Pchilka, and her father, a lawyer, paid a lot of attention to children's humanitarian education, developed an interest in literature, language learning, and translation work. Among the close circle of the future poetess were well-known cultural figures: M. Dragomanov (her maternal uncle), M. Starytskyi, M. Lysenko. All this contributed to Lesya's early entry into literature: she was already writing poems at the age of nine, and began publishing at the age of thirteen. In 1884 in Lviv, the magazine "Zorya" published two poems ("Loli of Lily" and "Safo"), under which the name Lesya Ukrainka appeared for the first time.
