SEASONAL FLU
Seasonal flu (also known as influenza) is a highly infectious illness caused by a flu virus. The virus infects your lungs and upper airways, causing a sudden high temperature and general aches and pains. You could also lose your appetite, feel nauseous and have a dry cough. You may need to stay in bed until you feel better. Babies and small children with flu may also appear drowsy, unresponsive and floppy.
How to Avoid Flu
The most common complication of seasonal flu is a bacterial chest infection. Occasionally, this can become serious and develop into pneumonia. A course of antibiotics usually cures the bacterial infection, but it can very occasionally become life-threatening, particularly in the frail and elderly. Other serious complications are uncommon.
How It Is Spread
Many of the symptoms of flu are similar to those of the common cold, and many people incorrectly refer to a heavy cold as flu. Symptoms of a cold appear gradually, are not severe and affect just your nose and throat. Symptoms of flu are more severe, causing fever and aching muscles. You will not be able to do your usual activities.
Seasonal Flu and Its Symptoms
Preventing the spread of germs is the most effective way to slow the spread of flu. Always: ensure you wash your hands regularly with soap and water, clean surfaces regularly to get rid of germs, use tissues to cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze, and put used tissues in a bin as soon as possible.
Seasonal Flu Jab
Seasonal flu immunisation, or the flu jab, is the injection of a vaccine against flu. It gives good protection from flu that lasts for one year. The flu jab is offered to people in at-risk groups, who are at greater risk of developing serious complications from flu. To stay protected, they need to have it every year. The vaccine, which is normally available in autumn, is made from the strains of flu that are expected in winter. The flu vaccines currently available give 70—80% protection against infection, with flu virus strains closely matching those in the vaccine. In the elderly, protection against infection may be less, but immunization reduces the chances of pneumonia, hospital admissions and death from seasonal flu.

WHAT’S A UNIVERSITY EDUCATION WORTH?
Every year, it costs British students more and more to attend university. Students are graduating with larger and larger debts. So, is a university degree really worth it? In 2006, the UK government started to allow universities in England and Wales to charge British students tuition fees. As a result, more than 80% of students in England and Wales now take out a student loan . They use the loan to pay for tuition fees, books and living expenses. The average student in England and Wales now graduates from university . Students of medicine, who study for longer, usually have debts of more than £20,000. That is a lot of money. It means graduates cannot afford to buy a house for many years. They even struggle to pay rent on a flat, because they have to start paying back the student loan after graduating (or after leaving a course). If you start to earn over £15,000 a year, the government takes repayments directly . Is it any surprise, therefore, that the average British person does not leave their parents’ home until they are 30 years old? You might think that a British person with a degree will find it easy to get a well-paid job. However, most people in «white-collar jobs» seem to have a degree these days, . Also, British companies tend to value work experience over a piece of paper. Like everyone else, graduates usually have to start at the bottom and work their way up. That can be very frustrating for them, since they are often over-qualified for the work they are doing. , they had dreams of getting an exciting, challenging job. Therefore, life after university ends up being quite disappointing for a lot of graduates. Students have always been seen as not having a lot of money, but «student poverty» is now considered a real problem in the UK. Most British students expect to get a loan, part-time job or summer job. Worse than that, however, is the fact student leaders report there are increasing numbers of students to support themselves financially.
