Are You a Vegetarian?
People have different eating habits. For some families, eating meat is a daily habit, while others choose a vegetarian diet. A vegetarian does not eat meat or fish, but they may eat dairy products like milk, cheese, and yoghurt, as well as eggs. Some people become vegetarian because they want to be healthy, others care about animals, and some simply do not like the taste of meat.
Doctors say it is necessary to have a balanced diet with every important food group: grain, fruit, vegetables, dairy products, nuts, and beans. Grain products like bread, rice, and pasta give us energy. Fruit such as an apple, banana, or orange has a lot of vitamins. Carrots, onions, and potato are easy to digest when they are boiled or baked. Beans and nuts are healthy and can replace meat in some meals.
At home, families cook different dishes. They may fry chicken, pork, or turkey in a frying pan, bake lamb or salmon in the oven, or boil rice in a saucepan on the cooker. Some people love fish and prawns, while others prefer a hamburger. When we cook, we use many ingredients: flour, butter, sugar, salt, milk, and eggs. To make a cake or pie, we mix the ingredients in a bowl with a whisk or blender. We use a grater to peel and cut vegetables on a chopping board. Don’t forget an apron and oven glove! After cooking, the food goes into the fridge or microwave.
Before breakfast, lunch, dinner, or supper, we lay the table. We put a plate, bowl, glass, cup, fork, knife, tablespoon, and dessertspoon. Some people drink coffee, others prefer tea or juice from a bottle. For snack time, many students eat biscuits, shortbread, or fruit. Both healthy food and sweets can be part of our cuisine, but not too much sugar.
At a picnic, there may be lots of salad, soup in a thermos, bread, cheese, yoghurt, nuts, and some home-made cake. There aren’t many vegetarians in some classes, but there are a few. All students should respect different eating habits. The most important thing is to eat healthy food and feel full of energy.
After a meal, we use a tissue and clean the kitchen. Food waste can go into compost. Good food, good taste, and good habits make every meal special.
A vegetarian does not eat meat or fish.
