From Rejection to Success

As a child, I lived in South Africa and my parents decided that I should go to Great Britain to study acting. We had found out which was the best drama school and decided that was where I would go. My parents even rented a flat for me.

When I was eighteen, I arrived in England and a week later I had an audition at that school. It was a scary but short experience which lasted about ten minutes. The group of people who had auditioned had to wait in a small room and then the registrar entered that room and said, «None of you today.» I could not believe that I`d travelled halfway across the world to get a rejection. I went back to the hotel convinced that there would be a message for me saying, «There has been a mistake, we did not mean you.» But they did.

Then I went for an audition at another school. That school sent me a letter which said something like, «You have failed, and we also recommended that you think of a different career.»

Without my parent`s support I would have given up. Eventually I got into a different school, but when I was leaving the principal said some things that I found very depressing. He told me that I was not going to be a successful actress.

I remember being very sad when I did not get a part in a play in London`s West End. It was a part that I thought was made for me.

One of the things that my mother has taught me was that it is very important to be able to evaluate your own work. It is very hard because there is always the director, other actors, the audience and the critics and all of them have their own opinions.

Last year I suddenly realized that I had become a part of the British theatre establishment. I was asked to play in a musical to celebrate Laurence Olivier`s (Britain`s most famous actor) birthday. It was the most frightening night of my life. I thought of my grandmother, who was illiterate housewife, and I suddenly saw how far I had come.
