The European Union’s Aims
An [consequence, aim, process] is something that someone tries to do. The European Union has five things that it tries to do. These are:
1) The European Union tries to [promote, cancel, control] economic and social progress. This means helping people to earn a [minor, low, decent] amount of money to allow them to live. The EU also makes sure that all people are treated [unfairly, fairly, indifferently].
2) The Union is Europe’s ‘voice’ during times where lots of countries are [discussed, taken up, involved] in important discussions. This will hopejully make sure that other countries listen to what Europe, has to say.
3) People who live in a European country are European [members, citizens, inhabitants]. Having European citizenship means that you are entitled to four special rights. These are:
Being allowed to travel between European countries and if you want, move to another EU country to live.
Being allowed to vote, or even try to become a [member, resident, citizen] of parliament.
An [ambassador, trial, embassy] is a place that you can go if you need help with something serious when you are in a different country. Someone from the United Kingdom would go to a British Embassy. If someone from a European country needs help, but their country does not have an embassy in the place that they are visiting, they can go to the embassy of another European country. So, if someone from Scotland needed help when they were [underseas, abroad, at home], and there was no British Embassy, they could go to the embassy of a different European country.
Being allowed to use the European Ombudsman. An ombudsman is a company that helps people who have [complaints, wishes, ideas]. The European Ombudsman has the job of making sure that the European Union [lives, meets, treats] its citizens fairly.
4) The European Union also tries to allow its citizens to live [carefully, safely, well], without war. Freedom, security and justice are very important to the EU.
5) Another important job that the European Union has is to make [laws, documents, writings] that protect its citizens’ [responsibilities, rights, ideas].
