St. Nicholas Day is a very special holiday for Ukrainian children and adults. It is observed on December 6 in Western Christian countries, and on December 19 in Eastern Christian countries using the old church Calendar. Saint Nicholas has always been considered to be a patron saint of children.
Holiday Traditions
Shortly before the holiday children, write letters to Saint Nicholas where they list all their wishes. St. Nicholas would definitely prepare the present for those who behaved well. Naughty kids get twigs.
Special round cookies called ‘mykolaychyky’ are baked for this day. These cookies are put under the children's pillows as sweet presents as well as they are given to all friends and relatives as a wish of joy and health.
Presents and Charity
St. Nicholas Day presents can be different. It is up to parents to decide what gift to put under the child’s pillow. It can be a toy, a book or sweets.
Also this holiday is often associated with numerous charity events and fundraisers for orphaned children and people in need.
