From the History of Golf
Golf was introduced to England in 1608 and the first golf clubs appeared near London. It is believed that golf was first played by the Romans. But the fact is that the game was played by the Scots in the 14th or 15th century. In the 16th century Mary, queen of Scots, played this game in France and the game had a success. The game became so popular with the Scots that they spent too much time playing it. So the Scottish parliament made a law which didn't allow playing this game.
Since the 17th century golf has become extremely popular all over the world.
Nowadays more than 24 million people play golf at least once a year.
