Read the text and tick three important thigs for the job
I want your job: film director
Richard Bracewell is the film director. His debut feature film was released last year.
A. I got into the business by making as many short films as I could.I totally involved myself in film, particularly dramas. when I wasn’t making films I was working in a cinema where I could watch them.Film directors eat, sleep and drink - it becomes an obsession. You are always learning so you need to write, shoot and direct films as much as you can.
B If you need to film scenes outside, you have to get up early to make the most of the natural light. There are usually lots of problems on set. For example, the equipment might be delayed on a motorway. It is like being in a nursery school sometimes, with everyone screaming at you. However, it is your responsibility to find solutions on the spot and make creative decisions. You’ve got to be decisive. At the end of the day you watch the rushes which is the raw material that you’ve shot the previous day. When you are not filming, there is a lot of editing and setting up of meetings.
С.You have to be diplomatic. You have to manage lots of creative people who often don’t get on with each other. You have to be strong enough to stamp your foot if you are not getting what you want. And you need a thick skin because when your film comes out it is your reputation on the line. If people don’t like your film, they may criticise you personally, which isn’t easy to cope with as far as I am concerned.
D. My advice is to find some talent a great writer a fantastic actor or team of actors. Check out online film communities and post a message saying you are looking for a great script.Or get in touch with drama schools and talk to actors in their final year. Find out if they want to work on your film. You also have to get some practical experience and work hard. Do a camera course like I did: learn basics of using a camera, sound and editing. Then go out and shoot your own films.
E. what I love most is filming the first shot of the day. It’s like the whistle at the start of play: for those 30 seconds between the worst “action!” and “Cut!” you are totally focused.
F. There is no general rule when it comes to pay. As a freelancer you negotiate your salary. As for career progression, it is fairly unstructured. You might start off doing pop videos or television commercials and then gradually move on to films. At the end of the day every director has followed his own route in.
