The Hobbit Motel in Waitome, New Zealand
Although it is located near a major highway, and largely caters for tourists coming to visit the nearby cave complex, the Hobbit is far from being a typical, boring motel. It has been built to look like the houses inhabited by Bilbo, Frodo and all the other hobbits in Tolkien’s masterpiece, the Lord of the Rings. The rooms are warm and cosy, and comfortable, just as you would expect in a house belonging to a hobbit.

The Treehotel in Harads, Sweden
Created by entrepreneur Kent Lindvall in 2010, the Treehotel complex is situated in the heart of a pine forest near a small town just fifty kilometres south of the Arctic Circle, in a region often covered in snow, with below zero temperatures. Its six ‘tree rooms’ are built high up at the top of the forest canopy, and, while each is expensively but functionally decorated inside, their exteriors have a unique style. One looks exactly like an over-sized bird’s nest, another appears to be a UFO from a science fiction movie, and a third is shaped like a cube and covered in mirrors.

Propeller Island City Lodge in Berlin, Germany
More of an art installation than a hotel, Propeller Island City Lodge is the creation of German artist Lars Stroschen. Back in the 1990s, Stroschen bought up the apartment block he lived in and turned it into a hotel. All thirty rooms in the block can now be booked by adventurous tourists keen to spend the night in a place with very strange interior decoration. While there are some conventionally furnished rooms, many others are outrageous, ranging from a room with lion cages as beds to one in which all the furniture is upside down.
