Masterchef Junior is the junior version of Masterchef, and it’s really popular. It started in 1994 and it is made in 27 countries. The show is for chefs aged 8–13, and it’s quite different from the adult version; the judges join in more with the young chefs, they are kinder and they give lots of positive comments. You’re not going to learn complicated cooking techniques, but it’s a lovely family programme, and it teaches you some useful cooking skills.
Mythbuster Junior is an entertaining science programme. Teenagers test ideas about things that some people believe in by doing experiments to see if they are true. In one episode they tested something you see in many Hollywood movies – can normal household furniture actually help block a person trying to get in a door? The teenagers are really inspiring. They all have knowledge in areas such as inventing, engineering and computer programming and they work in teams to explore how things work and why. I love this programme and the experiments are fascinating!
Little Big Shots is a talent show with a difference. There are performances and there is an audience, but there is no competition! The children are aged 3–13 years old, and they show their talents and then have a chat with the host of the programme. There’s a huge variety of talents for all interests; music, dance and magic tricks are some examples. It’s easy to see why this programme is so popular. It’s funny and entertaining, and I would definitely recommend it.
Shark Tank is a reality TV programme where people do a presentation about their product, and then successful businesspeople, or ‘sharks’, decide if they would be interested in providing money and give recommendations. There isn’t a separate junior series of this programme, but the series does have special kids’ episodes. Their youngest competitor was a 6-year-old girl who presented the idea for a paint-on plaster for cuts. The ‘sharks’ are a lot nicer than on the adult programme, but I was a bit disappointed as many of the children’s ideas seem to come from their parents.
Masterchef Junior has versions in different countries.
