The Golden Gate of Kyiv is one of Ukraine’s oldest historical monuments. It is located in a small public park at the corner of Volodymyrska and Velyka Pidvalna Streets and currently serves as a museum, a magnificent landmark and just a beautiful meeting point easy to locate and nice to wait at. It gave its name to the nearest underground station so no tourist wishing to see it will get lost. This gate was one of three constructed by Yaroslav the Wise, Prince of Kyiv, in the mid-eleventh century. It was modelled on the Golden Gate of Constantinople, from which it took its name. In 1240 the Golden Gate was partially destroyed by Batu Khan’s Golden Horde. It remained as a gate to the city during the eighteenth century. It gradually fell into ruins, but in 1982 the gate was completely reconstructed for the 1500th anniversary of Kyiv.
