The Animal Race

A long time ago in China lived the Jade Emperor. It was his birthday. He wanted to measure time to know how old he was. All the animals arrived to the Emperor. He decided to have a race on the river and to give a name to each year of the Chinese Zodiac. The Rat and the Cat couldn’t swim very well.

“Could you take us across the river? “, asked the Rat and the Cat.

“Yes, jump on quick! “, answered the Ox.The Rat and The Cat rode across the river on the back of the Ox. Then the Rat pushed the Cat across into the water and jumped on the land. The Rat arrived first!

“Well done! “, the Emperor said. ” The first year will be the year of the Rat and the second will be the year of the Ox.”The Tiger was very tired from swimming.

“Look! Here’s the Tiger! “, said the Emperor. “He’s very tired. The third year will be the year of the Tiger!”The Rabbit was very intelligent and went across on a tree trunk.

“The Rabbit can’t swim but he’s very clever“, noticed the Emperor. “The fourth year will be the year of the Rabbit” he said.The Dragon was very late.

“Why are you late, Dragon? You can fly!” asked the Emperor.

“I had to make some rain for the thirsty people to drink.” answered the Dragon.

“Well done! The fifth year is the year of the Dragon!” shouted the Emperor.

“What’s this, wondered the Emperor. “I can see the Horse! No! It’s a Snake!”The Snake got a ride on the horse’s leg.

“So, the snake has the sixth year,” decided the Emperor.The Goat, the Monkey and the Rooster arrived together.

“Well done! It’s good to see you working together. The Goat is the eighth, the Monkey is the ninth and the Rooster is the tenth!” concluded the Emperor.Soon the Dog came.

“Sorry, I’m late! The water is clean and I needed a bath”. The eleventh year is the year of the Dog.The last animal to arrive was the Pig .

“You are the last!” said the Emperor.“Yes, I’m late. I had to eat and sleep on the way,” answered the Pig. The last is year of Pig.And that is how the Emperor chose the animals for the Chinese Zodiac.
