Have you ever wished you had your own place? 1_____ Using materials which mostly came from recycling centres, he constructed his own home. It’s got everything he needs, including a kitchen, a bathroom (with shower), a bedroom and a toilet. 2_____ It’s unusual for another reason too – it’s built on wheels, so Austin can take it with him wherever he goes. He did most of the work himself although he had some help from his father and family friends. The whole thing took less than two years.

3_____ Then he moved in, and he’s lived there ever since. He likes the independence, and he likes ‘living small’, he says, because it’s cheap and green. 4_____ However, when he leaves school and goes to university, he won’t leave it behind.

He’s going to take it with him, and live in it while he studies. Then, when he gets a job, he plans to take his little house with him once more.

Task 2 Read the text "Ballet Black" . Match questions 1-6 with paragraphs A-E that answer the questions. There is one extra question

Questions
Paragraphs
1

What can you see on stage?

А

Ballet Black is a professional ballet dance company based in London. It was started by a young woman called Cassa Pancho in 2001 when she discovered that there were no professional black ballerinas in the UK. Pancho’s father is from Trinidad, and Pancho was disappointed that there were no role models for young black or Asian dancers. Since then, she has dedicated her life to changing this. The company started off very small. Pancho had a job as a receptionist to earn money to buy shoes and train tickets for the dancers, and her grandmother gave her £2000 for their first show. When they first started, there were only eight dancers, four men and four women. Pancho was one of the dancers.

2

How do the dancers earn money?

Б

In the beginning, Ballet Black performed at a small theatre in London, but later they were asked to move to a big theatre in Covent Garden. They also started to get money from the government and charities, although everyone who worked for Ballet Black had another job as well as dancing. They were only dancing two or three days a week, as their shows didn’t make much money at the box office.

3

Who can see Ballet Black perform?

В

When people go to the theatre to see ballet, they usually expect to see beautiful costumes, expensive scenery and even special effects, but Pancho is less interested in this. For her, the most important element of any performance is the dancing. She wants the audience to only focus on this, so works on creating shows that are both gripping and imaginative with complex characters. She asks her designers to make simple costumes. They use old material and clothes from second hand shops. Everything that you see on stage can usually fit into a suitcase.

4

How does Pancho encourage more people to dance?

Г

Since the company started, many things have changed in the world of ballet. There are more and more black and Asian dancers in all dance companies, and you can now buy ballet shoes in brown as well as pink. Ballet Black is also special as they visit both big and small cities. This means that people who can’t travel or who don’t have a lot of money can also experience great quality dance performances. There are still things that Pancho would like to change, though. At the moment, they do not have live music at their shows. They use a recording instead. In the future she’d like to have her own musicians.

5

Why was Cassa Pancho disappointed with Ballet Black?

Ґ

As well as Ballet Black, Pancho has started a dance school for three- to eighteen-year-olds. The classes are open to anyone, from any cultural background and they are very popular. She also runs workshops for people of any age. There are no limits, anyone can join and anyone can become a dancer. Pancho’s biggest hope for the future is that one day, Ballet Black won’t have to exist anymore.

She hopes that there will be the same opportunities for dancers from any background. What’s certain is that she is inspiring a new generation of dancers.

6

Why did Cassa Pancho start Ballet Black?

1 Why did the writer forget what she was watching?

The new phone

What’s your shopping style? Do you research products online before carefully making the right decision? Do you rush to the shops and buy the first thing that you see? Perhaps you get your mum to do your shopping for you? I’m usually a mixture of those styles, but recently I did something I’ve never done before.

I was watching TV one rainy evening and, as usual, there were all those irritating advertisements in the middle of the film. This particular break was so long that I even forgot what I was watching, but perhaps that was because I was very tired after a long week at school. Anyway, I don’t know what happened to me. I don’t usually take any notice of the adverts, in fact I quite often turn the volume down when they’re on. But this time I was surprised.

There was an advert for a smartphone and since I was actually thinking of getting one at the time, I started to pay attention. The phone seemed really great. It looked very stylish and came in a whole range of different colours. They said it was nice and light but the best thing about it was the camera. The photos they showed looked amazing.

I was a little bit nervous, but I decided to go for it and I ordered one. I must say I wasn’t sure about my decision when I woke up the next day but the phone arrived that morning so it was too late to cancel the order. And I was impressed with how fast it arrived which I thought was a good sign. Unfortunately, I was wrong. I’m not at all happy with the phone. I’m sure it’s faulty. For example, I texted a friend yesterday and the message went to the wrong person. That’s really bad – it made me feel uncomfortable and my friend was very confused – she didn’t know what I was talking about. Another thing is, the battery doesn’t last for very long. I charged it last night but it’s almost dead again already. I’m sure it should last longer than that, my old one used to last for days. It’s very disappointing, I hope they give me my money back.
