The Golden Gate of Kyiv is one of Ukraine’s oldest historical monuments. It stands in a small public park at the corner of Volodymyrska and Velyka Pidvalna Streets and currently serves as a museum, a magnificent landmark and just a beautiful meeting point easy to locate and nice to wait at. It gave its name to the nearest underground station so no tourist wishing to see it will get lost. This gateway was one of three constructed by Yaroslav the Wise, Prince of Kyiv, in the mid-eleventh century. It was modelled on the Golden Gate of Constantinople, from which it took its name. In 1240 the Golden Gate was partially destroyed by Batu Khan’s Golden Horde. It remained as a gate to the city during the eighteenth century. Although it gradually fell into ruins, in 1982 the gate was completely reconstructed for the 1500th anniversary of Kyiv.

The London Eye

The London Eye is a giant observation wheel located in the Jubilee Gardens on the South Bank of the river Thames. It is modern but already a very popular tourist attraction. The London Eye is 135 metres high, which makes it the world’s tallest observation wheel. It has 32 capsules and carries around 10,000 visitors every day. It is visited by over 4 million people a year. While travelling in complete safety you can see up to 40 kilometres away in all directions from each capsule. Many famous landmarks are clearly visible, including Buckingham Palace, St Paul’s Cathedral and the Houses of Parliament. In 2009, a 4D Film Experience was added as a free extra to enjoy before your ride on the Eye. About 160 visitors pass through the 4D cinema every 8 minutes so don’t worry about waiting as the cinema is more spacious than it first seems.
