A Ghost Story
My grandparents had a little holiday place, which they always stayed in for a few weeks in the summer. We sometimes spent some time with them after we finished school. It was on an island, and the only way to and from the island was by boat.
One night, when my grandparents were already in bed, I heard a strange noise coming from outside, like an animal that was in great pain. I was too frightened to go outside and look, but the next day I told my grandad. He just laughed loudly and said, ‘Laura, it was probably a bear.’ I knew it wasn’t! I looked outside but didn’t find anything unusual.
The next night, I heard the same thing, but this time it sounded much more human! I switched on the bedroom light, went downstairs and looked out of the windows, but I couldn’t see anything. I had to go outside if I wanted to see what the noise was. I opened the door slowly – I was so frightened! I could only see a little bit of the lake with the light from the window. It was cloudy that night, covering the moon. The noise was very loud now, and suddenly a boat sailed slowly through the light then back into the dark. I screamed because sitting on the boat was a teenage boy, his mouth wide open as he shouted, his empty eyes looking straight at me.
My grandma found me lying on the floor outside the bedroom. It was difficult for me to talk, but I told her about the boat and the boy. ‘That was your dad’s big brother,’ she said quietly. ‘He went out on our boat one day and never came back. He was only fifteen when he died.’
The story happened during a holiday. |

A Ghost Story
One winter, I stayed at my grandparents’ house during the school holidays. I never liked going there. I loved my grandparents but hated the house. It was huge and very old and there were always a lot of strange noises, especially at night.
One night, I was half asleep in bed, listening to the wind outside when suddenly there was a loud banging at the window. I was so frightened I couldn’t move. I shouted, ‘Grandma! Grandpa!’ but they didn’t hear me. There was another big bang at the window like someone wanted to break it. I still didn’t move, too scared to get up and pull the curtain back to see what was there. An hour later, at about midnight, the same thing happened – Bang! Bang! Bang! on the glass. This time, I got up and walked to the window. I was so scared, but I quickly pulled back the curtain and saw… snow! There was nothing moving but snowflakes, but then I saw the footprints. There were two sets of footprints, one coming to the window and another that disappeared into some trees near the house. I put my coat on and followed the marks in the snow. Under the trees, there was an old man with long white hair cutting wood with a huge sharp axe. He turned and looked at me, his eyes like fire and ran after me all the way to the house. I closed the door quickly just before he got there.
The next day, I told my grandparents and they laughed and said, ‘Oh, Yasmin, you just met your great grandfather! He was a very unhappy man, who died in your bedroom.’
Yasmin didn’t enjoy seeing her grandparents. |
