I have been living in Melbourne for over three years now. Located in the southeastern part of Australia, it is the capital of the state of Victoria. The city is situated around Port Phillip Bay and is often called the "cultural capital" of the country. One thing you should know about Melbourne is its highly unpredictable weather. Locals often joke that you can experience "four seasons in one day," so it is always wise to carry both sunglasses and an umbrella.
What I love most about Melbourne is its vibrant, multicultural atmosphere. The city center is famous for its narrow, graffiti-filled laneways which are packed with independent coffee shops. Melbourne has a massive coffee culture, and people here take their espresso very seriously! Most tourists head straight to the Queen Victoria Market to buy souvenirs and try street food, but if you want to escape the crowds, the Royal Botanic Gardens offer a peaceful retreat.
If you are a sports fan, Melbourne is paradise. It hosts major international events like the Australian Open tennis tournament. However, the most popular local sport is Australian Rules football (or "footy"). The atmosphere in the stadium during a match is absolutely electric.
To explore the city's rich artistic side, you shouldn’t miss the National Gallery of Victoria. It features incredible collections of both international and Indigenous art. Another fascinating place is the Melbourne Museum, where you can learn about the region's natural history.
Personally, I cannot imagine living anywhere else. After school, my friends and I usually meet at Federation Square to watch live performances or grab a snack. At weekends, we love riding our bikes along the Yarra River. I used to spend all my weekends playing video games, but I eventually gave it up because I realized that exploring the city and being outdoors with my friends is much more rewarding.
Melbourne is legally considered the _________________________ of Victoria.
