An interview with young journalist, Anna Rathbone
What did you want to be when you were a child?
I’ve always been someone who is happy to talk in front of an audience. So from a very early age, I wanted to be an actor, a politician, a TV presenter – that kind of thing. I remember the day I started school – my classmates were crying and I was making friends with the older kids.
So how did you become a journalist?
I’ve always loved writing but when I got to High School, I was asked by my teacher to write something for the sports page. I’ve never been interested in sport but I accepted the job. I interviewed the coach of the local basketball team as I knew some of the basketball players. And that was the first of many articles.
What is your working day like?
It’s busy. I get up very early and spend the first part of the morning reading the headlines, listening to the news and answering emails. If I’m working on an interview or an important event, I’ll do an internet search and download information. Around midday, I’ll often set off to interview people or cover an event. Some days I’m home again by five but on other days I might not get back until late.
What are you working on at the moment?
I’m taking a break right now. I’ve just finished an article about young explorers, you know, teenagers who have been all around the world. Before that I was working on an interview with a vegetarian family who grow all their own food. Then in March, I’m flying to Los Angeles to interview people who are famous for their graffiti.
What have been the best and worst moments so far?
I’m not sure I’ve ever had a worst moment. I spend a lot of time on my own which means I get lonely sometimes. My trip to Antarctica was really tiring but it was also unforgettable. I met a group of scientists there who are studying the penguins. The ecosystem is amazing. The penguins are at the top of it so if their population changes, life for all the other animals and plants in that area will change too.
