Past Tenses

It all             [started, had started] as I made my way home from work. We                  [had been working, had working] on a top secret computer programme for over a year, and everyone              [were getting, was getting] pretty nervous about finishing on time, so it was good to get away from the office. It                  [had been raining, was raining]and it seemed like everyone was travelling home at the same time, anxious to avoid getting wet. As I watched, she opened her handbag and took out what looked like a hand-held computer. She              [was checking, checked] something on the screen, and then looked in my direction. Suddenly, my mobile phone            [was making, made] a sound that meant I had a text message. Frowning, I              [was pressing, pressed] a key and the message appeared. 'Your daughter has been kidnapped. We know you have completed the programme. Follow the woman in red.' I             [looked, was looking] up just as she                       [was disappearing, had been disappearing] around the corner. I raced after her.
