Can you imagine how theatres used to be a hundred years ago? If you ever visit Canada, you will be able to discover two such theatres – at the same time! In the Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre, as the name suggests, there are two theatres, one on top of the other, and you can visit both with the same ticket.
The centre was built in 1913 in Toronto and was designed by the architect Thomas W. Lamb. Elgin Theatre is in the centre and is the bigger of the two theatres, with 1561 seats; the Winter Garden Theatre has 992. The Elgin is decorated with statues, while the upper level Winter Garden has paintings of plants and pillars that look like tree trunks.
The Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre is one of only twelve such theatres which were ever built around the world. It's the only one in Canada, but is unique for another, far more important reason: it's the last one anywhere that is still putting on performances and showing films.
The centre is one of the sites where the Toronto International Film Festival is held every autumn. One of the largest and most important events of its kind, the festival is attended by nearly half a million people over eleven days, including top actors, directors and producers from Hollywood and around the world.
A wide variety of other performances take place at the centre throughout the rest of the year. There is something for everyone, including concerts, musicals, operas and motion pictures. The musical Napoleon premiered in the Elgin Theatre in 1994 before going on to a six-month run in London's West End.
For those who are interested, there is a guided tour of the centre on Thursdays at 5 pm and another on Saturdays at 11 am. Lovers of history often come in order to see parts of the original theatre like the dressing rooms backstage, and other treasures from the early days of the Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre.
