We arrived in Bali, Indonesia early in the morning. As soon as we got to our hotel, we quickly unpacked before heading straight for the beach to do what we came here to do … surf! Bali’s beaches are incredible. The water is blue, clear and warm while the sand is soft, white and clean. I was floating on my board, waiting for the next wave when I noticed a sudden change in my surroundings. The water turned rough and the sky was dark and cloudy. People were calling to us with panic in their voices. I quickly paddled back to the shore where another tourist told me that a tsunami was on its way! We followed the locals to the top of a big hill where we watched huge waves crash past the beach and into the town’s streets. Bicycles and street stalls were floating in the water. It was a terrifying sight!
It’s 48 hours since the tsunami hit. We evacuated the area and spent the night in a rescue shelter with all the town’s residents. Thankfully, everyone survived the tsunami. I phoned home to let my family know I was safe as soon as I could. It was such a relief to hear their voices! We decided to use our remaining days in Bali to help clean up the area. Of course, the tsunami caused lots of damage to many buildings and there was mess everywhere. Experiencing a tsunami was very scary but it made me realise how important it is to support victims of natural disasters. I want to raise money for the Balinese people when I return home next week.

Read the information about three volunteering jobs (A-C) and questions (1-4) below. For every question choose the job it refers to and write the appropriate letter in the box. One of the jobs matches two questions.
A) We are working hard to protect the village from flooding and we need you! Help us create flood defences around the secondary school and the houses in the lower part of the village, or collect food, blankets and medicines for children. If you are interested please contact Rescue Now at 0771 3457 960.
B) The village needs help quickly. The current flooding is the worst in years and our rescue teams are under a lot of pressure. We need people who can help plan the building of flood defences, as well as arrange deliveries of urgent supplies to the elderly and families with young children. Please contact the Mayor’s office at 0207 858 9989.
C) Our village is still struggling to cope with the rising water levels. Rescue workers and volunteers are working around the clock to build flood defences and deliver supplies. Hollydale School is now a shelter for local children and we are looking for volunteers to play with them, read to them and sing them songs. If you’re interested, please contact Mrs Smith on 0207 555 9854.
Which job is best for someone who
1) is good at building things?
2) is very organised?
3) would like to gather supplies?
4) enjoys working with children?

I never knew I had a brother!
It was just an ordinary day when seventy-year-old Maisie Cooper stopped to give directions to a tourist. When the well-dressed Canadian said the name of the street Maisie offered to show him the way. 1 'While we were chatting, he told me his father had lived here before he emigrated to Canada. Then he mentioned his father’s name, and that's when we realised!'
She grew up believing she was an only child. After her
parents' separation her mother brought her up as a single parent. She thought she would be much happier with a bigger family.
Since that meeting Maisie has enjoyed getting to know her newly discovered family. Ronnie and Janet have extended their stay in London, and now they are planning a visit to Canada for Maisie.
A That was how Maisie met her half brother Ronnie, for the first time.
B She has already met her sister-in-law Janet, and spoken on Skype with several nephews and nieces in Canada.
C Until that day, Maisie had had no idea that Ronnie even existed.
D Her father sent her presents and cards for her birthday.
E Sometimes she felt so alone and abandoned without any other relatives.
