Omar Tello, a hero of the environment

When he was a little boy in Ecuador, Omar Tello remembers being surrounded by nature. However, as the years went by, more and more of his beloved rainforest was cut down to make way for farmland. Gradually the plants, insects, birds and wild animals that were such an important part of his life disappeared.

Omar grew up, trained as an accountant and began working in a bank, but his passion for the rainforest never left him. He became obsessed with finding a patch of land that had previously been rainforest and restoring it. Everyone he told about this plan, (17) ____, thought it was crazy. He did not disagree with them. However, he felt unable to stand by and watch the destruction continue (18) ____.

Eventually, in 1980, when he was 23 years old, he found and purchased a piece of land outside the town of Puyo. The piece of land was small, just seven hectares. In the beginning, Omar would go to work at the bank during the day, and in the evenings and at weekends (20) ____.
