At home we’ve just got something called a ‘smart meter’, and it tells youexactly how much electricity you are using. I think the idea is that you [save, charge, consume] less if you have one, but it does make life a bit more difficult. My dad keeps turning off all the lights saying we are [throwing, wasting, recycling] electricity, but it’s very hard to do your homework in the dark! Mum’s the same – she thinks we can [consume, reduce, save] our heating bill if we all wear lots of warm clothes, which is probably true but is a bit annoying. Still, I am trying to teach them about the importance of [recycling, reusing, reducing], but they aren’t very interested. I explain that you put glass in the glass bin, paper in the paper bin and plastic in the plastic bin, but they often just [throw, waste, reuse] everything away into the main bin without thinking.

Animals in danger
There are many kinds of animals in the world that are in danger. Snow leopards, for example, which live high up in the [mountains, hills, valleys, island] of the Himalayas, have almost disappeared. In India, there are only a few tigers left in the wild because the [deserts, forests, caves, streams] where they live [get, gets, got, are getting] smaller and smaller. People cut down the trees for wood, farmersneed the land, and if cities continue to grow, the problems [are, will, could, might] only continue to get worse.
If an animal [is, has, will be, was] beautiful, like a tiger, people are happy to give money to protect it. But the problem is that there are many other creatures that are in danger – some snakes, crocodiles, sharks and spiders, for example, and not everyone thinks they are as attractive. Many people dislike them and have little interest in [saving, staying, stopping, solving]them, but they are all in trouble because of problems like pollution or [carbon, fossil, toxic, climate]change. Scientists also remind us that every creature has a part to play in its [planet, geography, environment, position], and if any one of them disappears, it is impossible to know what the consequences will be.
