Ball lightning is a common weather event that happens during every thunderstorm.
Weather can be unpredictable, but sometimes it turns downright bizarre. Around the world, people have witnessed strange and freaky weather events that seem more like science fiction than science fact. One example is “raining animals.” Frogs, fish, and even spiders have been reported falling from the sky during storms. Scientists believe that strong winds or tornadoes can suck up small animals from lakes or forests and drop them miles away.
Another strange event is ball lightning — glowing orbs of electricity that appear during thunderstorms. They float through the air, sometimes entering homes, and disappear with a loud bang. Although rare, ball lightning has been observed for centuries, and scientists still don’t fully understand how it works.
Then there’s fire rainbows, which aren’t rainbows at all but colorful halos that appear in cirrus clouds. They form when sunlight hits ice crystals in just the right way, creating dazzling bands of color high in the sky.
In 2004, a town in India reported red rain, where raindrops stained clothes and buildings. The cause? Microscopic algae mixed with rainwater.
And don’t forget heat bursts — sudden blasts of hot, dry air that happen at night. They can raise the temperature by 10°C in minutes, leaving people shocked and confused.
These freak weather events remind us that nature is full of surprises. While scientists try to explain them, many remain mysterious — and a little bit scary.
