NO TO NEGATIVE NEWS?
When you watch the news, sometimes it can feel like journalists only want to report on the bad things in life. Most of the stories are about terrible, depressing events. Everyone knows that good things happen in the world as well as bad. Perhaps journalists think disasters are more interesting for viewers than positive news. It’s also possible that viewers prefer negative news so that’s what journalists report. So who is deciding about what goes in the news: journalists or the public? Many people often say they would prefer good news: but is that actually true?
Some researchers at a university in Canada think they know the answer to this question. They ask volunteers to choose some stories to read from a news website. They then use a special camera to follow their eye movements. This checks which stories they read and how long they spend reading them. They also ask the volunteers which kind of news stories they usually like to read.
The results of the experiment are surprising and, like the stories that were read most, somewhat depressing. The volunteers mainly choose negative stories and read positive stories much less. The surprising thing is that the same volunteers also say that they prefer good news and think that journalists report too many negative stories. So there’s a big difference between what people think and what people do.
The researchers think this shows that people naturally want to hear about bad news. They think this is because, in the past, people used bad news to avoid danger.
