Task 1. Read the text and choose the correct option (A, B, C or D) for questions 1–5.
Air pollution in Beijing is becoming a major health problem. Winter months are especially bad because more coal is burned for heating and there is less wind to blow the smog away. Pollution levels often exceed WHO safety limits, and poor visibility forces motorways to close.
In 2014, media highlighted this issue when residents watched a digital sunrise on giant TV screens because thick smog hid the real one. Although this image was part of a regular commercial, it helped raise awareness about environmental problems.
To improve air quality and reduce pollution levels, local authorities plan to limit coal use, move factories further from cities, and ban older, polluting cars in favour of greener forms of transport. Beijing’s past experience, such as measures taken before the 2008 Olympic Games, proves that effective environmental steps can significantly reduce pollution and make a huge difference to people's lives.
Why does air pollution in Beijing increase in winter? [A) It was a festival, B) Smog blocked the sun, C) It was mandatory, D) To test new TVs]

Task 2. Read the text quickly and choose the newspaper section that it should not appear in.
Every few years, world leaders hold an Earth Summit to discuss the many environmental problems that the world now faces, and they sometimes make decisions as to what should be done to lessen the impact of issues such as climate change and rising sea levels.
Unfortunately, businesses are often more powerful than scientists, so many good ideas are never implemented. It is true that the endless repetition of warnings from the scientific community often fall on deaf ears, but as environmental changes become more obvious to the population, I believe they will begin to demand positive action from businesses and governments alike.
