THE GREEN SEA TURTLE
The green sea turtle is a large turtle which lives in warm coastal waters around the world, but the largest populations today are in Flida, the Caribbean, Hawaii, and Borneo. In all these places the turtles are at risk. In the past there were about some million green sea turtles in the world, today scientists believe that less than 200,00 adult females remain. Here we have some of the reasons why numbers of this and other sea turtles have declined.
People around the world have used the meat of the green sea turtle for food since ancient times and it is the main ingredient in turtle soup. Hunters usually look for the eggs, which the female turtles bury on sandy beaches. In many countries there are laws, which ban hunting for turtles but people continue to do so illegally.
Every year, more than 10,000 sea turtles die in fishing nets because they can't get away from them.
If you look at any sea or ocean, you can see much rubbish in it. This rubbish is extremely dangerous for turtles. When they eat plastic, they die because plastic blocks their digestive systems.
More and more beaches, where the turtles usually lay their eggs, are used by tourists. So, turtles can't live there any more and their populations can't become bigger.
Say if the statements are true or false.
