A Big Role of Little Pictures

Look at this funny yellow ball. We can see it every day, but we hardly know anything about it. For example, that it is more than 50 years old!

Its history began in Worchester (USA) in 1963. One day Harvey Ross Ball, a designer, was asked to make a logo for an advertisement of one company in his town. Harvey took a piece of yellow paper and painted two dots and a line. It took him 10 minutes to do it and they paid him 45 dollars. The managers of this company put this symbol on their workers’ badges.

All the people liked this symbol, because it made them smile and cheered them up, “Smile” became more popular in the 70s when two businessmen Bernard and Murray Spain began to use it everywhere—on the postcards, badges, posters, T-shirts, etc. The USA postal service made a special stamp with a funny smiling face. This picture with the phrase “Have a happy day” became a motto of those years.

In the 80s this “yellow fellow” travelled to the world of Internet. Scott Fahlman, an American scientist, proposed to use the combination of symbols “:-)” to mark jokes, or things that you think are fanny in your message. Besides he offered to mark things that are not jokes with “:-(”.

Every year people all over the world see more than 50 million “smiles” in the streets, magazines, on TY, etc. If you write the word “smile” in Yandex search, it will show you the result of 84 million pages. “Smiles” live in our mobile phones. You also can see musical and sports “smiles”, New Year and Christmas ones. They can sleep, jump, cry and do almost everything that we do in our everyday life. They are like our little copies.

It is interesting that Yandex shows 3 billion merry “smiles” and only 700 million sad ones. So we can say that people, using Internet, have fun instead of being sad. Of course, it is not necessary to learn all the “smiles”. You need only to bend your head left or right and you will easily understand the meaning of the “smile”. Here you can see some popular “smiles”

:-) - this is that merry face from which the story began.

02012ryt-7ced-23x21.jpg- I'm sad.

02012ryw-b3b8-20x19.jpg - you are my friend and I give you a wink.

:-D -  it was a good joke, I'm laughing.

:-P - I'm naughty. I will show you my tongue and you will do nothing to me.

:-/ I don’t think so.

:-* -  thousands of kisses for you.

:-Е - I'm very angry.

Besides you can make your own “smiles”, there is only one important rule - other people must understand them.
