Kyiv
I’m from Ukraine. The capital of our country is Kyiv. It is a very beautiful city, especially in spring, when the chestnut trees are in blossom. Kyiv is situated on the Dnieper, the longest river in Ukraine.
Kyiv is one of the oldest cities in Europe. There is a legend about its founding.
Once there lived three brothers Kyi, Shcheck and Khoryv. They had younger sister Lybed. They founded a city on one of the hills above the Dnieper and called it Kyiv after the elder brother. In honor of the younger brother one of the hills was named Shchecavitsa, and another one – Khorevitsa. The river was called Lybed after their sister. Antient Kyiv was large and powerful city. It played an important role in development of written language, literature, painting and architecture.
Kyiv is a seat of the higher body of state power of Ukraine, the Verkhovna Rada. Kyiv is a scientific centre. The Academy of Sciences of Ukraine is here. Kyiv's cultural life is rich and varied. There are many theatres, museums, exhibitions in Kyiv.
Kyiv's theatres are well-known. The famous National Opera and Ballet Theatre and other theatres are greatly appreciated by the Kyivites and the guests of the city.
The most important educational institutions of Ukraine are in Kyiv. The National Ukrainian University named after Shevchenko is in the centre of the capital.
Kyiv is famous for its monuments. The monument to Prince Volodymyr in the picturesque park on the Dnieper hills has become a simbol of the ancient city.
Kyiv is also famous for its beauty. The capital of Ukraine attracts tourists with numerous places of historical interest. They are Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, St. Sofia’s Cathedral, St. Volodymyr’s Cathedral, the Golden Gate, the monuments to Bohdan Khmelnytskiy, Taras Shevchenko etc.
The central street of the capital is Khreshchatyk. There are many fine buildings in Khreshchatyk. All Ukrainians are proud of their capital.
