Go Along And Find Yourself

After two days in Florence, Italy, I had already met some fascinating people. When you are with a companion it’s easy to focus on that person and forget about meeting Europeans and other travellers. Without the comfortable crutch of a friend, you are more likely to know the joys of self-discovery and the pleasures found in the kindness of strangers. You will be exploring yourself as well as a new country and culture. Solo travel gives you complete freedom and independence and you can follow your own schedule. You can decide where to go, how far to travel, how much to spend and when to *call it a day.

Of course, there are downsides of travelling alone. Accommodation typically costs more because you are not splitting the bill and you may be more vulnerable to theft. There's nobody to watch your back. And there's no one to watch the luggage while you go to buy train tickets. You have to carry all your gear yourself, which can be both inconvenient and stressful. But the biggest struggle is loneliness. If you don’t feel comfortable travelling alone, consider joining a tour. I have talked to many people who put off their travel dreams because they don’t want to do it alone: don’t delay – just go!

*To call it a day – бути задоволеним

Say whether the statements are true or false.

1. Many people are afraid to travel alone but it can be a rewarding experience.   [T, F]

2. People do not learn things about themselves when they travel.   [T, F]

3. The author thinks it is better to stay home than to travel without friends.   [T, F]

4. Solo travel gives you complete freedom and independence.   [T, F]

5. The author thinks it is better not to join a tour when you don’t feel comfortable to travel alone.   [T, F]

Choose the correct variant:

1. What did the author do in Florence?   [A, B, C]

a) he ate lots of tasty things

b) he met fascinating people

c) he made a business trip

2. According to the author, which of the following can you enjoy when you travel solo:   [A, B, C]

a) self-discovery

b) self-confidence

c) self-reliance

3. Which of the following best describes the decisions you can make when you travel solo:   [A, B, C]

a) where to go, how much to spend, when to rest

b) where to go, how much to sleep, when to rest

c) where to go, how much to spend, when to eat

4. Which of the following is something negative about traveling solo:   [A, B, C]

a) more expensive food

b) more expensive hotel rooms

c) more expensive airfare

5. Which of the following is an advantage of joining a tour:   [A, B, C]

a) not being alone

b) not being hungry

c) not being tired

6. Generally speaking, what does the author think people should do?   [A, B, C]

a) decide to travel by themselves

b) find a tour group to join

c) follow their travel dreams

Read the text below. Match choices (A-H) to (27-32). There are two choices you do not need to use.

MAKING FAMILY TIME A PRIORITY

The health of the family is usually not an area of focus. Parents may only become aware of the need for growth when tension or crisis occurs. The following list outlines the major areas that will help build family unity:

27)   [A, B, C, D, E, F, G]Consider how others in the family are treated. If every step taken is criticized, a child or spouse may feel worthless or unloved. Criticism can be very inappropriate. When the goal is to inflict pain or to get acceptable performance, then motives are wrong. Instead, make it a point to give positive feedback. Show others that they havQ value. Find areas where compliments and recognition are warranted. Give them responsibilities that can be handled.

28)   [A, B, C, D, E, F, G]Is the person speaking to you more important than the newspaper or television or internet or etc...? When a family member is speaking, they want their thoughts heard and understood. If attention is divided, it sends a message that ‘you are not important’. Respect and significance can be shown by giving undivided attention. Let the other person finish uninterrupted and then tell them wrhat you heard. When others are heard, it draws them to you.

29)   [A, B, C, D, E, F, G] Building family unity is not automatic. Parents need to build a vision and then provide leadership in bringing it about. Planning activities and sticking to a consistent schedule will demonstrate value and the importance of family relationships. Having periodic family meetings is a key aspect. These may address difficult issues, but the goal will be to get positive resolution and help build stronger bonds.

30)   [A, B, C, D, E, F, G]Interpersonal relationships can be difficult and painful. Family members are often hurt and do not think problems will be solved in an effective way. It seems easier to ignore or run away from conflict. Since family members are in a continuous relationship with each other, emotions can run high. Blaming others while trying to maintain self-respect and rights is a difficult balancing act. Show respect for others involved. Speak gently without attacking, condemning, or disengaging completely. Meet regularly so as to keep accounts short.

31)   [A, B, C, D, E, F, G] In relationships between parents and children there are tendencies based on gender, interests, and personality types that can affect how much attention a child gets. This may be entirely unintentional. When parents are interested in the same things as the child, the parent will gravitate in that direction. A parent may not be aware that this process is taking place. Sit down with your spouse regularly to evaluate how much time and attention is being given to each child. Plan ways adjust routines and patterns so that attention is split more evenly.

32)   [A, B, C, D, E, F, G]Every individual needs room to think, experiment independently, and to just be alone. It is natural for parents to want to keep their children on a path to success. Children need space to work through direction on their own. Instead task them with coming up with solutions and direction. Then have them come back with their own thoughts. It is even ok to allow some mistakes. It is important for family members to protect ownership, but it is also important to reinforce that sharing is necessary and good.

Which paragraph speaks about...?

A stress and lack of confidence
В the importance of family toleration
C listening habits
D the importance of family structure
E the importance of family harmony
F overcoming favouritism
G respecting personal space
H time management
