Long ago, in a small village in the hills of Ukraine, there was a little girl named Maria. She was kind, happy, and loved to paint. Maria lived with her grandmother in a small house with a garden full of flowers. One spring day, the snow melted, the sun came out, and the birds sang. Easter was coming, and Maria wanted to make something special.

Maria’s grandmother taught her how to make a pysanka. A pysanka is a beautiful Easter egg. It is not just a painted egg — it is full of love, hope, and magic. Maria listened carefully. She took a white egg, a little candle, and some colored wax. She used a thin tool called a kistka to draw on the egg. First, she made stars. Then, she made flowers and waves. The egg was red, yellow, and green.

“Every symbol has meaning,” said Grandma. “The sun gives life, the flowers show love, and the waves mean water. This is a magic egg.”

Maria smiled. “Can it help people?”

Grandma nodded. “Yes. Long ago, people believed that pysanky could stop bad things. If people stopped making pysanky, bad things would come.”

Maria did not understand at first, but she believed her grandmother.

That night, something strange happened. The sky turned dark. The wind was strong. A big shadow moved over the village. It was the Dragon of Darkness. The dragon flew from the mountains. It wanted to take all the colors from the world. It wanted to make everything grey and cold.

People were afraid. They ran into their houses. Flowers turned grey. The sun disappeared. Maria looked out of the window. She held her pysanka in her hands. It was still bright and beautiful.

She ran to her grandmother. “Grandma! The world is turning grey!”

Grandma said, “Only the pysanka can stop the dragon. You must be brave.”

Maria was scared, but she knew she had to try.

She put the pysanka in a little basket and walked to the forest. Trees were turning black. The grass was grey. The dragon flew above her. His eyes were red, and his voice was like thunder.

“Why do you come, little girl?” he said. “I will take your color, too!”

Maria held up the pysanka. “This egg has love. It has the sun and flowers. You cannot take it.”

The dragon laughed. “One egg? You think this can stop me?”

Maria looked at the egg. She thought about her grandmother, her village, the birds, and the flowers. She said, “This egg is not just an egg. It is hope. And where there is hope, there is light.”

Suddenly, the egg began to shine. It was like the sun. Light flew from the egg and touched the trees, the grass, and the sky. Flowers opened again. The sun came back. The dragon screamed and flew away into the mountains. He could not live in a world full of color and hope.

Maria stood still. The pysanka glowed in her hands. People came out of their homes. They smiled and laughed. The world was alive again.

Grandma hugged Maria. “You did it,” she said. “The pysanka saved the world.”

From that day, every person in the village made a pysanka every spring. They painted stars, flowers, waves, and suns. They told the story of the little girl who believed in hope. They never forgot that one small egg, full of love, could change everything.
